Biggest DIY Project Of The Year

Saturday, January 28, 2012

I enjoy working with my hands, wether it may be sewing, jewelry projects or all different kinds of crafts. It's one of my dreams to own a garage filled with every single power tool available in the hardware.

We moved into our condo in a rush and didn't really have the leisure of time to color coordinate paint nor the resources to shop for new furniture. Almost everything we have were handed down to us by both our grandparents and parents. Others, I salvaged from Mamita's storage.

Our walls have been white with gray trim since day 1. We started embarking on a minor renovation a couple years back but then we had the "big" accident and our finances went towards repairing that mess instead.

Like I said, finances are limited, but since I nejoy doing things myself and like having pretty surroundings, I am embarking on this major project alone. It will be my biggest DIY project of the year and I would like to share my progress with you since this blog has helped me improve a lot fashion-wise, I'm thinking it will help keep me  inspired and give me the push I need to keep going and finish the project. (Don't worry, I'll still be doing outfit posts and stuff :), I'll just be adding a few home DIYs to the current mix.) Hope you don't mind but more improtantly, I hope you will enjoy going through this journey with me.

proposed wall color

Past DIY project, I re-did this old table which belonged to my great, great grandmother, Mama Clara. It used to be a dark brown varnish with a marble tabletop. I changed the color and switched to glass from marble, partially due to the fact that the movers broke the original marble table top. Anyway, I like it better this way. Sorry, didn't clean up the mess on it anymore.

Another old project and another one of Mama Clara's pieces. I practically salvaged this from the trash. And sorry, I tried rotating and rotating this phot but it stillc ame out lopsided. Anyway, here's what I did with this one...which by the way comes in a pair. They're husband and wife Igorot lamps. It used to be in a dark brown varnish finish, one missing ear and the shade was just a goner. Cracked and terribly discolored. I was supposed to have the shade replaced but when I found out how much it was gonna cost me (about 3k a piece), I decided to just work with it. I sanded down the igorot, smoothed the edges where the earring was missing and gave it a fresh coat of paint. I also made some tassles and added that to the mix. For the shade, I bought an inexpensive curtain from SM (cheaper than buying fabric), created the pattern, cut it up and stuck it on the old shade with some Elmer's spray glue. I finished it off with a gross-grain ribbon to hide the un-even edges.

Leftover paint from previous projects.

What I'm working on today:

This is done, just waiting for the paint to dry, will show after tomorrow :)
Re-painting my kitchen cabinets in the fire escape:

So excited to post the before and after, forgot to remove the tape from the handles! :P
Amazing what a little coat of paint can do! So there, I hope I didn't bore you. I am just really excited about this project and can't wait to share the end result with all of you! :)

BTW, there's still some more stuff left in my closet sale. Visit my FB fanpage to check them out. Thanks!

Have a great weekend!

What I Wore Today: Wedding Guest

Wednesday, January 25, 2012

I was bitching and bitching about having nothing to wear and no time at all to shop for this wedding I had to attend last week. You know what they say about things that never seem to be around when you're looking for them but are all over the place when you don't need them? That's exactly how I felt. It seemed like all the malls and shops I entered were carrying nothing but sweetheart-cut, body-hugging, short cocktail dresses.  I hate feeling constricted so I always try my best to veer away from tight clothing (because I eat a lot and am too lazy to wear my Spanx).

After searching Megamall, Forever21, Zara and Topshop, with one day to go before the wedding...I finally ended up with this number from The Ramp:

I didn't want to spend a lot on something I was only going to wear once, so this dress was perfect at P2000.
The tailoring was exquisite and I love that it's still the right amount of conservative for a wedding even if it's a one shoulder style. Trivia: I hate wearing clothes that require a special kind of bra.

Haul: Pumps For Malling

Tuesday, January 24, 2012

How many pieces to be considered a "Haul"? I really don't know. I honestly thought that any shopping purchase was already considered a haul but I came across this question on twitter a few days ago. Apparently you need an "X" number of pieces before you can call it a haul? Anybody know?

Enough with the boring haul talk. I ended 2011 with a longing for "normal shoes". I have amassed so many pairs of platforms and wedges through the years and have been wearing nothing but, that I've kinda gotten tired of them.

You see, it's not that I used to have a particular dislike for grown up shoes, it's just that it was so much easier (and cheaper: Hello Korean pre-order sites!) finding wedges/platforms that fit well and were comfy. I managed to collect several black pairs of pumps before only because I felt that they were essential to a wardrobe. The reason why I hardly wore any of them was because they were all so bloody painful to walk in. After 30 minutes, it would feel like my feet were bleeding and on fire.

Hence, the search was on for a comfortable pair of pumps or in this case, pairs~Yes, I got a little carried away as usual :P

It all started with this pair that I discovered during one of my spontaneous visits to CMG.
Stacatto Pumps
I liked the shape and texture of it so I decided to try it on. I was surprised at how comfy they were. I immediately snagged them up and was doubly elated when I checked out at the counter and realized they were on sale! P899 if I remember right.
Next, I received this lovely pair from The Little Things She Needs. Not on sale but still very affordable and comfortable for only P1300*

And since I loved the black pair from Stacatto so much, I decided to go back and get the other color:
While picking those up, I came across these black and yellow babies which were also on sale:
I loved the yellow snakeskin detail and the barely there style which is so sexy when worn. They were also a steal for about P1600.

And then came the openrice event in Megamall. When bloggers attend an event in Megamall, there is almost always, the mandatory side trip to Forever21. During this shopping trip with Ana, we came across these multi-colored glitter pumps which were on sale for only P1000!
I haven't worn them out yet so I can't really tell you wether they're comfy or not. But for P1K, why not?

And now my favorite of the entire bunch:
Zara S/S 2012 Pumps
While shopping for a dress in Shangri-la for a wedding I had to attend last weekend, I came across this pair in Zara and instantly fell head over heels in love! A nude pair of heels is VERY important to have in your wardrobe because they literally go with everything. It has been my frustration for a very long time to find a comfy pair. I heard that the YSL's are super comfy, I was so desperate that I was contemplating on saving up for a pair. These heels from Zara, though not very cheap in peso standards for P5k, are a steal as compared to splurging on a pair of Tribtoo's. At 5K, they are worth every penny. I am still amazed at how comfortable they are. I had them on at 3pm and only got to take them off at 2am. After eleven straight hours, my feet were still fine! Now that's a good shoe :)

But here's the clincher. As if I hadn't purchased enough shoes yet for the month of January, I am going back to the mall later to purchase another pair. But this time, it's for a pair of running shoes. Yes, running shoes. As much as I don't feel like spending anymore, much less for a pair of rubber shoes, I have been getting sick quite often lately and Dennis has been encouraging me to excercise. So after much persuasion, I am finally biting the bullet today. Wish me luck! :)

Friday, January 20, 2012

Sorry about the photos, still working on the proper way to do evening shots. Actually, I have no idea how to. Just the basic aperture minus flash settings but it's easier said then done. I know this post is long overdue (it's mid-Jan already) but I've kinda been slacking a lot when it comes to blogging esp this 2012. So-hard-to-get-out-of-this-rut!

Anyway, this is what I wore to our family's New Year's Dinner:

All Silver!

old Silver cardi with gold flecks, silver top by Isaac Mizrahi, silver sequin skirt from F21, navy blue platforms with glitter heels from Pill

Hope you like!

Great news by the way, was finally able to find a dress for the wedding on Saturday! Found it at The Ramp in Crossings. I know, I should've gone there first but I was trying to not spend so much since I was only planning on wearing it once. Can I just say...it is so expensive to be in the malls searching for something in particular, there are just so many irrisistable goodies you find along the way.

I've been looking for a dress for about a week, within that span of time, I have amassed 4 new pairs of shoes, a corset, and a few other items. I know, right? It doesn't really help that most establishments are on their end of season sale either!

For the other shoe mongers out there, I have great news, in case you don't know yet, Rustan's is now carrying Jessica Simpson shoes! (insert evil laugh here) I've seen the collection and they are G-O-R-G-E-O-U-S and Sky High! Woot! Have fun shopping!
