DIY Dip Dye Ombre Shorts Tutorial

Monday, April 30, 2012

I went on a DIY rampage a couple of days ago and this was one of the projects I did.

Nothing quite spells summer as perfectly as a dipped dyed pair of denim shorts. It is one of the easiest and cheapest DIYs ever. Anyone can do it and its takes very little to time to accomplish. Here's how:

Pair your dipped dyed denim with neons for an effortlessly chic look. (another DIY is the hat, will share steps in a different post)

What You'll Need:

  1. Pail
  2. Bleach
  3. Hanger
  4. Old pair of shorts/pants

(my DIY arsenal for the day)

How To:
  • Cut shorts/pants to desired length. Standard is about 2 inches from the inseam. Cut starting from the inseam outwards. Shorts should be shorter  towards the outside to form a sort of "panty-like" shape. This shape will instantly bring your denim up to date!

  • Eyeball your shorts and determine where you want the dip dye process to begin.
  • In a pail, fill with enough water to hit your shorts at the right mark and minus about an inch because the bleach water solution will run up when your shorts are saturated.
  • Add about 2 cups of bleach to the water (It is important to dilute the bleach in water. Dipping your shorts in full bleach may cause your shorts to rip into pieces when washed)
  • Attach shorts to a hanger like so:

(sorry forgot to take a photo of the shorts but I took a photo of a shirt I dip dyed as well. same process. Clipping your shorts onto a hanger with clothes pins will give them a  more uniformed line finish and will prevent your shorts from slipping completely into the bleach bath)

  • Check every 30 minutes or so until you get the desired lift.
  • Once desired lift is acheived, wash separately. You can add a bit of vinegar to the wash to stop the bleaching process but I'm too lazy to do this so I just wash it normall. Works for me.
And you're done! Easy right? :)

A DIY for Reverse Dip Dye Ombre Shorts in Yummy Colors is coming up soon as well. Watch out for that.

Hope you liked this tutorial. Feel free to email me if you have any other DIY requests.

Will try to announce giveaway winners later.

Thank you for all those who supported me in the Parisian Bloggers Challenge! It was very much appreciated . <3

Perricone Acyl-Glutathione + Common Glutathione Misconceptions

Wednesday, April 25, 2012

Instant Gratification.

When it comes to skincare and beauty, I think everyone will agree with me when I say that what we all want and have been searching for has indeed been instant gratification. Who doesn't want to improve their looks upon application of a miracle cream?

But this miracle cream...does it at all exist?

I tried to find out for myself during the press release of Perricone's Acyl-Glutathione at Romulo Cafe in Makati:

Some of Perricone's tried and tested products:

The launch was facilitated by Jane Meredith who is a highly renowned global skincare expert and has worked with numerous prestigious skincare companies and luxury department stores like Neimann Marcus, Sephora and Saks.

Before I start my discussion on Acyl-Glutathione, I need to straighten out some common misconceptions about Glutathione first.

First and probably the most shocking of all, Glutathione has never been proven to whiten skin. I have attended numerous skin care press events, among them include some of the top brands in the industry such as Murad, Kose and the like, at all these events, the question of Gluthatione always comes up and we always get the same answer from these global experts, quite frankly they are surprised at the abundance of skincare products in the Philippines boasting Glutathione as a whitening agent. (this kinda made sense to me, skin whitening is big business, if it really was that easy then why haven't these giant brands jumped onto the bandwagon as well?)
Glutathione is already present in our body, in fact it is found in every cell.  It is foremost an antioxidant, an immunity booster and a detoxifier.

So now that we have that bit settled, let's get on with Perricone. Dr. Perricone believes in beauty emanating from the inside out. He believes that health problems are manifested in the form of wrinkles. So to be truly beautiful, we must be careful with what we eat as well as what we apply on our skin.

Sad to say, the best diet for beautiful skin is to go on an anti-inflammatory, low glycemic diet. Bye bye cupcakes, donuts and kisses. Sugar grabs collagen and elastin thus creating a rapid increase in skin aging for those with a high sugar diet.

Since I mentioned that Glutathione doesn't whiten skin, what exactly does it do?

Glutathione brightens the skin. Since it is an antioxidant, it promotes youthfulness in our skin.
As we age, the amount of Glutathione in our body rapidly declines therefore the need for a proper supplement that truly works is required if we want to look the best for our age.

Here is what I noticed after a few seconds of applying Acyl-Glutathione on the wrinkles of my hand:

(photos taken with an iPhone)

Notice the immediate decrease in fine lines? My skin got plumper too (a sign of youth)

To further demostrate this "wonder cream", Jane asked a member of the press to volunteer for some product application.

Notice the visible and immediate lift?
The effects are a lot more obvious when seen in person. You will notice that her pores are less visible and her skin appears tighter, smoother and more radiant.

Wait!!! I know what you're thinking...Before you rush to the nearest drugstore/grocery to grab the first whatever Glutathione product you can get your hands on, I need to burst your bubble.

For Glutathione to properly work and get activated, it needs to be combined with the right ingredients. Just because you slap it onto your skin doesn't mean it's gonna work miracles. Go on test my theory. It's sort of like match stick and the box. The match stick is vurtually useless unless you scratch it on the hard surface found on the box. Same with Glutathione.

Perricone's Glutathione is combined with Acyl making it both water and oil soluble, which means your body will be able to make use and absorb every single ounce of it.

If you're on the lookout for a dupe, sorry, his formula is patent pending.

I strongly suggest you visit the Perricone counter at Rustan's to sample this product for yourself.

It truly is a miracle cream, smells good too. The scent is very light and fades after awhile.

While you're there, make sure to check this out as well:

Invisible foundation!

Perricone is Rustan's Makati, Rustan's Shangri-la, and Rustan's Alabang.
Acyl-Glutathione will be available in the above branches by the end of May 2012. Make sure to call in your reservations!

Postura Project Day 21 - Denim

Tuesday, April 24, 2012

The photos have more noise than usual, sorry about that. The lighting was really weird, my photos came out dark and I had to majorly edit them for the color to pop out.

Just like probably 90% of Manila, denim shorts are turning into my summer staple. They're cheap (just cut up old pairs of jeans) and versatile.

I wore this outfit to Bioessence for my Ventosa experience. Paired denim on denim and accessorized with some vintage-y floral elements like my belt from Lucky Brand and Floral Hobo from Accessorize. Lastly, for the Postura element, wore it with these yellow wedges from SM Parisian.

Hope you like despite the poor photos :)

The Ventosa Massage at Bioessence

Monday, April 23, 2012

Ever heard of Ventosa? Ventosa is an old traditional massage in China which is meant to restore the flow of Chi. Most people shy away from the Ventosa because of the fire element involved. At Bioessence however, they managed to totally eliminate the use of fire, and instead infused elements of the traditional Pinoy hilot for a truly unforgettable spa experience.

I had my Ventosa treatment at their West Avenue branch...

The West Avenue branch is large, spacious and clean thus making it my favorite Bioessence branch to date.

And in case you didn't know, Bioessence also carries a fine line of skin care products that you can
purchase :

And now onto the experience.

I was ushered to the lounge on the second floor as I waited comfortably for the staff to finish prepping my room...

The staff at Bioessence are VERY friendly and more than ready to cater to your every need. They truly know how to make you feel right at home.

Bioessence has Turkish Sauna rooms which everyone getting a treatment are free to use. I was a little iffy about this at first because being "trapped" in a little compartment with just my head sticking out didn't really appeal to me much. I get claustrophobic easily howevr, I am a sucker for trying anything new so I gave it a shot.

It still felt a little claustrophobic but the tv they had in the room made it a little better. What I like about Turkish style saunas is that you can control the temperature more accurately and the fact that you're head is sticking out doesn't make it hard to breathe. I still highly recommend a few minutes inside these contraptions since the "super fresh" feeling you get after showering is priceless. 10-15 minutes should do the job but if you have the patience to stay longer, stay. Or schedule a visit with a friend so you can do it together to avoid boredom.

And now onto my room. Ballers like me get nothing less than the executive room! HAHAHA.

The rooms at Bioessence are equipped with "mood lighting". You can choose between a regular dimmer, pink or blue. I chose pink cause I found it to be the most relaxing. It doesn't feel kinky when you're inside the room :P

You can avail of the executive room for only P1800* (not sure, might be P1200) which comes with a massage for two and unlimited use of the jacuzzi. The executive room comes with your own shower, toilet and wash area.

large roomy jacuzzi for two:

The staff explaining the Ventosa/Hilot massage to me:

and my awesome therapist:

Before getting a massage, your required to go straight to the jacuzzi for a bubble bath which they already prepared while I was steaming in the sauna:

When I returned to the room, I was welcomed by the sight of a warm, candlelit bubble bath.

Scary, floating head in the bubble bath:

You don't need to bring bath and body products with you since the rooms/bathrooms are already equipped with high-grade shampoos and bath gels:

After my ultra-relaxing bubble bath, I was given delicious hot tea to enjoy while I dried myself off and changed into my massage appropriate robe.

Instead of the traditional "fire cups", Bioessence uses suction cups which creates the same effect. It sucks out all the "lamig" which makes us uncomfortable and is most of the time, the source of all back pains. This doesn't hurt at all. You wouldn't even realize that they are on your backs already if not for the clinking sound they make when the therapist grabs for them.

Some people report redness after getting this treatment. I was informed that the redness usually goes away by the following day. Fortunately, I didn't experience any redness on my back.

After the Ventosa, my therapist started rubbing warm, smooth sheets of banana leaf on my back. This felt sooo good and relaxing. Do not underestimate the power of the leaf! Upon research, I found out that the Banana Leaf treatment has long been a part of the traditional "Hilot". The banana leaf is rubbed against your back and it supposedly "stops" on your problem areas making it easier for the therapist to figure out which areas to concentrate treatment on.

The whole Ventosa + Hilot treatment lasted about an hour and a half - almost 2 hours. The whole spa experience took about 4 hours. I highly recommend it. All tightness on my back disappeared and I felt refreshed and very relaxed afterwards. Now that's getting your money's worth.

Postura Project Day 20 - The Fashionista Commuter

Saturday, April 21, 2012

Borrowed the title from the blog of a good friend of mine, Ana. :P Look at my nervous face...hahaha. Not very attractive, looks like I need a trip to the loo. hahaha

So anyway, back story....here's what happened, let me share my adventure with you as I spent a day in the shoes of the fashionista commuter! (I keep on laughing/smiling everytime I type that phrase.)

Okay, here's what happened. I normally shun events on Tuesdays since my car is color coding. This time though it was for Perricone and it was at 11am so I thought, no problem, window hours, so I RSVP'd only to find out the day before that the coding break doesn't exist in Makati...okay....but it was Perricone and I wasn't about to miss it just because of coding.

To better understand my dilemma, you'll have to understand that growing up, I was never allowed by my mom and grandparents to commute because of the dangers involved. I was bombarded with horror stories here and there of things that happened to a friend, a friend of a friend or a cousin while on route in a taxi towards their destination.  So naturally, all these stories got stuck in my head and thankfully, I have never been faced with a situatuion wherein I will have to commute by myself alone, until this day.

I have ridden cabs before but always with friends. This was my first time alone and it was HOT and I was thinking that maybe my attire might have been a little too skimpy for a cab ride but upon consultation with my friends, they said it was okay, just put your bag on your lap to cover your legs. So this I did. I also brought along an extra pair of flats like they do so I wouldn't get tired in case it was hard to catch a ride home. Turns out, I really didn't need it but it's always better to come prepared.

In case you can relate to me about this situation, here are some tips. I think I've graduated from this experience and I now feel old enough (HA-HA) to commute by myself and not be held hostage at home just because our car is coding.

Before you take that ride, here are some things to remember:

  1. Choose your cab wisely. Don't get in if the locks are busted or if the driver smells like alcohol or is somewhat suspicious-looking.
  2. Once inside the cab, immediately text the plate number and company of the cab you're riding in to your husband/parents/friend.
  3. Always sit behind the driver and carry something sharp with you, a nail file can do just fine or better yet travel with pepper spray. Sitting behind the driver makes it more difficult for him to maneuver himself towards you, and you can easily stick that sharp object at his neck just in case he tries to do something funny.

Things I wish we didn't have to deal with when riding cabs:

  1. That STENCH! most cabs have this characteristic smell of cheap air freshener, diesel and man sweat which makes riding a taxi nauseating especially when mixed in with the manila heat.
  2. Why do they always have to drive like they're competing in NASCAR??? So many close-calls in just this one trip! My heart!!! hahaha

So, the lesson of the story is, I survived and made it to the event in one piece. I probably made too much of a big deal out of it but I still think it is better to be paranoid and safe than complacent and careless.

And in case you're wondering...yes I will most probably take another cab ride by myself again soon. I find it quite convenient, especially on Tuesdays.:P Plus, I don't have to bother myself with finding a parking slot!

Postura Project Day 19 - Through Hazy Lenses

Wednesday, April 18, 2012

A very delayed post taken right after a shoot I had for Maybelline. Since I was all made up already, I didn't want to waste the beautiful hair and make up job done on me so I asked Dennis if we could go out for some dinner and drinks.

It was the perfect opportunity for us to try out this new Italian restaurant that my cousin's good friend just opened in Makati called Cucina Rusticana, and have a little couple time afterwards at one of our favorite bars, "Blackbird" formerly "Penguin". I'll tell you all about Cucina Rusticana in a different post. Too much goodness to write :)

So anyway...back to Blackbird...Blackbird is located along Kamagong and features our country's most awesome live acts. Another reason why I love this place is because it has the "old feel of SaGuijo" which I miss so much.

On this night, we were lucky enough to encounter Paul Puti-and Mr. Jun Lupito himself. If you don't know who they are, google them, they are worth the search. I have a couple videos of them that I shot using my 8mm app but I am having a hard time uploading them to my YouTube page, seems they always "time-out" and I don't know how to fix it....

Some Instagram Photos...

It may seem unusual for a bar to have great chow but Blackbird's Brick-Oven Pizza is one of the best pizza's in the metro. A must-try! Affordable too. Oh and did I mention? Beer is cheap! P40/bottle.

Margarita Pizza:

Blackbird also has some of the coolest concept stools I have ever seen. Fancy your ass on your favorite LP covers??

Pretty neat idea...

And OOTD...."Like A Bawse" LOL!

Pardon the photos, I was using my phone to shoot the entire night since this was sort of an impromptu event.

Cool black light graffiti wall by the toilet. Eye-candy but makes terrible photography.

wearing: black scarf necklace by me, gold glitter sweater from Ukayista, Topshop black skinnies, Jeffrey Campbell Lita, Balenciaga Motorcycle.

Special mention: I just totally fell in love with the faux-hawk they did on my hair. Wish I had the ability to replicate!

Anyway, gotta go! Cooking dinner, dinner might burn. Not good.

Not good.
