I've often wondered which gods at Pantone decide on the colors we will be wearing every season and why we almost always unquestioningly follow. Don't you? What's the selection process like? Do other colors parade down a "stage" like x factor and then soon after narrowed down through several judges until they come up with the ultimate color combination? Or is it all an extremely complicated marketing ploy brought together by the freemasons of fashion and design?
It doesn't matter since we all follow blindly like sheep twice a year. I can't explain it but I always feel an invisible shove from inside me urging me to shop once "THE" colors are announced. I can't help but purchase a few pieces in "IT" colors and it almost feels like the lottery when it happens that the chosen color for the year is something I've already managed to stock up on prior.
F/W 2012 was the emergence of Burgundy and now for spring/summer 2013, we are all clamoring for emerald and sure enough, our favorite shops are all stocked up and ready, just waiting for us to pull out our credit cards.
I have nothing against Pantone and colors of the year. It's an excuse to shop and I'm all for that. However when it comes to summer, I always have my favorites despite whatever trends or colors may be currently hot on the runways and in the editorial pages of fashion magazines.
For me, summer will always mean, stripes, plaid, ginghams, white, and bright citrus colors. Think picnics and sunny days on the beach. And then maybe I'll throw in an accessory or two to add in the mandatory color of the season :P
