is zumba for you? a zumba fitness + ps3 review

I will be the first to admit that I don't live a very healthy lifestyle. Although I am into everything natural and organic, I am also deep into my vices and I think I try going the natural route to overcompensate. That being said, stuffing myself with as much green leafy vegetables and fruits still wasn't enough to keep me in tip top shape. Ever since I hit my thirties, I started to feel a gradual decline in my energy and over-all physical well-being. I could hardly climb a couple flights of stairs, I could only jog a block, I started getting chronic back problems and I would get sick more often than I ever did in my entire life.

It's hard to totally quit the nasty habits so I decided that some excercise must be in place. I have been planning to "get fit" since the onset of 2013 but you know how it is...ms procrastination always manages to reschedule and delay it til it never happens.

Until Dennis decided one day to go and purchase a playstation 3 while I was out at an event. I have been opposed to getting one for the longest time because you know how it goes right? It usually ends up dirty in a woman vs. the ps3 fight. (I still kinda feel the same way...somebody should stone to death the creators of nba2k, fifa and grand theft auto. Seriously. Anyway, going off topic...) During one of our ps3 game shopping trips at Data Blitz, I decided to go off on my own and check out the merchandise. I found this battered Zumba Fitness box in one corner. (I guess the gaming geeks aren't really into south emerican dancing...:P) I guess I first bought it just to piss Dennis off and cut some time into his gaming schedule. I had to purchase a Playstation Move as well (for Nikola and myself initially, 2 against one!). It cost me around P3K for everything...

ps3 zumba fitness review

And then I finally managed to squeeze in some PS3 time and hook up my newly purchased equipment...

the ps3 zumba fitness comes with its own belt for your ps3 move wand that you strap around your waist while doing your routines. It checks wether or not you're doing the moves right.

To demonstrate how totally not serious I was about this initially, I just wore slippers and houseclothes for the first 2 days. And then I started to feel the burn, the sweat and the benefits...It was like a eureka moment...hey...this could be my new excercise routine (big grin)! So on the third day, I finally brushed off the dust from my almost brand new running shoes I bought on a whim a year ago and wore that. Oh my god, it made such a difference! I could follow the moves more accurately and I was sweating like a pig. What made me fall in love with it more was the difference it made to my skin. I was glowing all over and the dullness was gone, just after 3 days!!! After a week, I could see a change in my belly fat. The bloatedness was visibly diminishing and I looked reasonably better in leggings and a tank top. Jackpot!

I think Zumba works for me because it's a lot of fun. The reason why I quit working out was because I found it BORING. The monotony of a treadmill and a stationary bike just wasn't for me. I also saw lifting weights as tiresome and pointless...it made me feel like a meathead. (haha). Shaking my booty and jumping around while I shed fat is definitely more appealing to me! The Zumba Fitness for PS3 offers different levels of expertise and workout times and routines so it's never monotous. I first started out doing 25 minute beginner classes. It was so addictive and I could feel my body wanting more that I extended to 3 25 minute beginner routines until I was able to unlock the 45 minute intermediate level. Having different levels and times work great for me. I could go hardcore on days when I'm feeling stronger and move back down to beginner levels on days when I'm not feeling 100%. That way, I don't get too lazy to miss a single day of excercise. Yes, I've been doing it almost everyday! (big pat on my shoulder for me!) Another reason why it works so well for me is because I can do it in my own living room and at no cost so it leaves me with no excuses not to do it.

I have never taken a Zumba class in my life so I really can't compare but I've read other reviews on this "game" from professional Zumba instructors and they have only good things to say about it. One thing I found out during my research though is that the dvd version is crap. But again, I've never tried it so I don't know for sure.

Anyway, after about a month of doing Zumba almost everyday, my backpain is gone, I feel a lot more energized and there are days when I prefer to dance around rather than knock bottles down. That's a really good thing.

Money-wise, health-wise, I give this a rating of 5 stars. If you have a PS3, an XBox or a Wii lying around at home and want to get fit, I strongly suggest you pick this up. You may not look as cool doing it (in fact I think I look like a complete idiot doing it), but it works and it's a lot of fun. If you don't have a gaming console, try attending a class. It's G-R-E-A-T and it's a total body workout.

ps. decided to add this at the last minute for those of you who are lazy to read in "essay form" :)

Benefits Of Zumba: (for me at least...)

  1. weight loss plus inches lost most especially around fatty areas like the belly, butt and arms
  2. toning
  3. energy + confidence boost
  4. endorphins :)
  5. fun, not boring, hence easy to incorporate into daily routine
  6. gets rid of backpain/other chronic body pains
  7. sexy waistline, firm butt
  8. improves posture
  9. teaches someone like me with two left feet awesome dance moves\
  10. ability to rock any party!
