red-eyed hoodies and neon elephants

Sunday, June 30, 2013

I arrived home late one night and was given these two packages by our guard. I wasn't expecting anything so I was pleasantly surprised not just by the gifts but by not having to pay duties as well. Last time I received a Fedex package from Hong Kong, I had to pay around $25 in taxes.

Turns out, the two packages were orders that I recently made from Persunmall and Chicnova. It normally takes about a month for my clothes to arrive when I order from sites similar to theirs but these only took about a week or less and I didn't have to pay anything extra. Now, that is something, don't you think? Not only do these sites carry extremely fashion forward pieces, they're also very affordable and now, also very accessible.

So, what exactly did I get?

First up are these 2 pieces from Persunmall. I have been so addicted to origami skirts and skorts lately. Already have them in black and white but I wanted more so I immediately snatched up this blue pair of skorts the minute I saw it. The fit is fantastic and blue is supposedly a big color this F/W 2013 so I imagine a lot of wear and tear out of this. Plus it also goes so well with the next thing I picked up...

persunmall blue origami skorts skirt
How cool is this Keep Watch! hoodie in red???  I can't think of anything more street than this. Pair with minimalist sandals and shorts/pencil skirt for an automatic luxe sports look or with ripped boyfriend jeans and pumps for a chill outfit that's still classy.
persunmall keep watch clothing hoodie street style
And last but definitely not the least, this adorable neon print elephant sweater from Chicnova. I've always had a thing for elephants. Not sure if it's cause of Dumbo but I can't seem to resist these creatures.

I was especially drawn to this sweater because of its fit. It's slightly oversized but not entirely shapeless and its also very, very cozy. There's something about a knit sweater that nevers fails to make me feel safe and all loved up. Plus, being black with just a little pop of color makes it a no-brainer to match with other pieces already existing in my closet.

feijoada: farewell conway's

I skipped the Preview Best Dressed Ball for this. Am I crazy? It depends on your perspective.

Although known throughout the years as a bar for the older set, I have a lot of memories in Conway's. Spent many high school and college nights there with friends and uncles discussing life, love and the future. My desire to stay anonymous and my inclinations as a recluse always draw me towards dimly lit hotel bars where bumping into someone I know is close to imnpossible.

An opportunity to bid farewell to one of the establishments closest to my heart in a Brazilian style fiesta was just too irrisistable for me to miss out on. Also, some friends of mine were performing that night: husband and wife team extraordinaire, Bogey Bernardo and yummy-mummy Denise Gonzales-Bernardo. Bogey was on the drums along with the rest of the crew from the Samba School Imperatriz Filipinense and Denise, when I recall Denise from that night, nothing else comes to mind but the term "Whirling Dervish". She, along with a few other women were really putting on the moves and did a fantastic job in maintaining the festive mood for the night.

Everything was authentically Brazilian, from the food down to the waiters, it was as much a gastronomic delight as it was a feast for the senses.

wink shapewear: postpartum + slimming (review)

Friday, June 28, 2013

I went to the Spa in The Fort, BGC a couple days ago to meet the lovely ladies behind Urban Essentials Inc. and to familiarize myself with their flagship product, Wink Shapewear. Needless to say, I was quite surprised with their age. Urban Essentials is run by young women which therefore translates to a unique understanding and appreciation for the needs of other young and modern professionals, hence Wink.

Wink was developed in America and has a strong cult following there, in Australia, Singapore and now in the Philippines due to its unique composition.

Unlike its other competitors, Wink prides itself on the only shapewear brand that features a 51% Tactel Nylon Fiber and 49% Lycrasoft blend. What does this mean? The unique and high quality blend of fibers in Wink Shapewear ensure that....

  1. It's suitable not only for slimming purposes but is a highly recommended postpartum binder by the best OB-GYNE's worldwide. Helps you get your normal belly back after pregnancy.
  2. It provides constant and even compression which promotes blood flow and helps boost energy level by up to 22% in males and 30% in females.
  3. It's breathable and allows air to circulate close the skin so guaranteed no rashes or irritations.
  4. It's anti-microbial
  5. Enhances skin tone. Compression improves lymphatic drainage, smoothens the skin and reduces the appearance of unsightly cellulite
  6. Slimming. Wink Shapewear was engineered and developed by doctors to provide perfect balance of power, stretch and comfort. Wearing regularly guarantees reduced inches in target areas (tummy, etc)
  7. Improves posture and decreases backpain

Wink Shapewear comes in 6 variations that cater specifically to your different needs and problem areas.
  • Ultimate Belly and Hip Shaper - P2370
  • Ultimate Belly Blaster - P5590
  • Ultimate Postpartum Original Bikini - P3870 (their bestseller)
  • Ultimate Postpartum Ultra Bikini - P3870
  • Tummy Tucker Tank - P2800
  • Booty Shaper Shorts - P4300

wink booty shaper shorts and ultimate belly and hip shaper
I was given  a pair of their Ultimate Postpartum Original Bikini to try for myself, unfortunately, it's a size too big and I will have to exchange it for a smaller size but despite that I could already feel it's effectiveness in compression.

Admittedly, I am fairly skinny, but I am also what you can call "skinny fat" or slim with bulges (which I am pretty sure most of you can relate with unless you're one of those peole who gym religiously) and one of my biggest problem areas are my belly (which never fully recovered after birth) and the fat above my bra line near my armpits.  And yes, I also suffer from a bad back and bad posture.

These problem areas aren't really emphasized in normal clothing like loose t shirts and button-downs but the moment I slip on a bodycon dress, BAM! They are visible than ever and make me look heavier and older (god forbid) than I actually am.

As you can see in the photos below, Wink Shapewear adresses these issues flawlessly. The result is a slimmed-down, svelte shape which I never had my entire life until now. :D If I was wearing the right size, there won't be any folds in the fabric. Just a smooth sexy silhouette.
wink shapewear
A few more things I love the most about Wink is that:

  • super comfy and doesn't feel restricting at all but gives ultimate compression (I've heard some people even wear them everyday even to the gym!)
  • doesnt' roll down
  • doesn't cause muffin tops (unsightly fat bulges above the garter)
  • noticeable support and improvement in my posture and lower back which I super need since everyone keeps telling me off to stand straight and not be "kuba"/hunchbacked

wink shapewear philippines
And lastly, easy access crotch snaps so it's not a pain to go to the toilet every 5 minutes for people with small bladders like mine!

To order your own shapewear from Wink, simply fill up the order form on their website, send an email to ask@urbanessentials.com.ph or call (0919)9129645 or (02)7012800.

If you prefer a Wink Specialist to measure you for your perfect size, you can also catch Wink Shapewear at the Karl Edward Bazaar this June-December 13, 2013 at the NBC Tent, Bonifacio Global City.

ps. Please share this news with all your friends and relatives who are pregnant or have just given birth, I assure you, they will be super thankful for it. Regular postpartum binders are such a nightmare to wear (they are bulky, hot and uncomfortable). I wish these were available back when I just had Nikola. Would've saved me a LOT of hassle.

rip coco

I'm sorry but I just have to talk about this first before I can continue to do normal blog posts. My bulldog died. She was run over by our people at the office and I am just so totally sad and pissed off at the same time.

It happened last week and it was kept from me.

I raised Coco by my own hands, she was the weakest of the litter with a caved-in chest but I did everything I could do to make her live which accounted for many sleepless nights. We sold the rest of the puppies but I couldn't bear to part with her so she was the only one out of the living 4 that we decided to keep.

We had this bond together and I really felt to an extent like her biological mom. I mean, I really, really loved this dog. The day Dennis announced that we had to transfer their living space to the office because of Condo rules and they were getting too big and unruly for our place, it totally broke my heart and we had a huge row over it. In the end, I had to acquiesce and today, I regret that decision more than ever.

She didn't get sick, she was run over and that was totally avoidable since there are a lot of people in the office to watch the dogs while the trucks back up. Also, I wasn't there. Did she die right away, couldn't she have been rushed to the vet and saved? I am beyond pissed and I feel like running over some people while simutaneously bashing them in the head.

I cannot step foot into our office for awhile until I calm down for fear of going into a rampage. I specifically tell them each time to take care of the dogs, watch them, because I love them. But I guess it fell on deaf ears.

I feel resigned. That's it I guess.

I vow to never again buy or adopt a dog unless I am 100% sure that there are no chances of them being evicted from where I live. God I am pissed.

I will miss you so much Coco, I know you missed me too and it really breaks my heart each time I had to leave you. Thank you for being such a great dog. I will never forget you....

caronia: the sound of color

Thursday, June 27, 2013

Ca-ro-nee-ya, Ca-ro-nee-ya...it's been like what? Over 15 years maybe and yet the melody of this old Caronia jingle is still stuck in my head.  I mean, who hasn't heard about Caronia, right? Before the invasion of all these imported nail laquer brands into our country, there was only Caronia and to this day despite the abundance of competitors in the nail polish industry, Caronia still stands as one of the most succesful, popular and recognizable brands...and for good reason.

They provide high quality Nail products at very affordable prices. But they don't just stop at that. Caronia understands the needs and wants of the modern woman. They know that we are constantly evolving creatures developing more sophisticated tastes over the years. Because of this, Caronia has decided to develop a new campaign which tackles the strong influence of colors in our lives. The way colors can serve as a chanel for self-expression and empowerment. Introducing, Caronia: The Sound Of Color.

The new collection has over 72 bright and trendy shades which are influenced by different genres of modern music. From the funky to the classic, the energetic to the serene, the harmonic to the edgy and loud, Caronia believes that the blend of these two timeless facets of self-expression-color and sound-are instrumental in inspiring women to share their passion to the world.

To kick off the campaign, Caronia will launch the Caronia Jingle Contest, a search for the best and most talented local act who used their own sound to bring the artistry of the Caronia Jingle to brand new heights. This contest asks people to perform their own rendition of the new Caronia jingle by Imago, with emphasis on how original and creative their entry is.

The culmination of the campaign will be held at the Sky Dome of SM North this November 8 but yesterday, few bloggers and members of the press were invited to a mini version of the actual affair at the RCBC Enterprise building complete with nail stations and live musical entertainment.

The different nail stations where we were given the chance to get our nails done according to our different personalities and tastes...

The pop booth featured saccharine, pastel shades, the rock, darker, more dramatic metallic hues and the alternative concetrated on neutral earth tones.

Check out the awesome nail art...I opted for black nails with little white crosses while the girl before me got British flag nails which I thought looked fantastic.
After the festivities, we got to take home samples from Caronia's new collection which were boxed in the same theme as the music that influenced the colors.

If you're an aspiring musician, make time to create your own interpretation of the Caronia Jingle for a chance to win up to P70,000!!! Me and Dennis are actually planning to submit our own entry. :))

before midnight review - no spoilers

I was given the privilege to catch an advanced screening of Before Midnight the other day. Before Midnight is the third installment of the "Before Series", hopefully you've seen them or are familiar with them?

Thinking you have seen the prior 2...In this 3rd sequel, Jesse and Celine are now in their 40s and living together in Paris. Jesse as a celebrated writer (he wrote two books, This Time and That Time - about his first two meetings with Celine) and Celine as an environmentalist. They also have two twin girls and another boy from Jesse's previously failed marriage.

Before Midnight is set in Greece, where the family go on a vacation by Patrick's (another esteemed writer) invitation at his villa.

In true "Before" tradition, the movie is all talk which is what makes it brilliant in my book.  I find it almost impossible to fathom how it is possible to keep an audience engaged for an entire hour and a half with just dialogue, no special effects and minimal casting but "Before" manages to do this effortlessly the same way a Die Hard film can keep you at the edge of your seat.

How? I think it lies on the realness of the situation, characters and discussions. The banter is always witty and relevant to its target audience. There were numerous times when I felt like Celine was speaking my mind, sometimes even Jesse.

Their problems are real, they look real and the arguments they have are so real that it makes you feel their frustration straight from the bottom of your belly. The movie's success relies deeply on its ingenius, quick-witted screenplay and flawless acting by both Julie Delpy and Ethan Hawke.

It is truly refreshing to be able to enjoy a movie that is this raw without the usual flashiness and high profile workings that most movies today thrive on.

Before Midnight is a great end (if it is the last) to the Before Series and I highly suggest you go see it with your partner/friends. Just make sure to watch the previous two first (in case you havent) so you can better appreciate this one. Trust me, it is one of the best movies ever released and is definitely a must-see.

Before Midnight is set to be released in all Philippine Cinemas this July 10, 2013

foldable boots by butterfly twists

Tuesday, June 25, 2013

Foldable boots. These are pure genius. Why nobody ever thought about these sooner I don't know. Maybe because the majority thinks like me. I never thought it was possible but apparently it is.

I love boots and I think this marks a very important event in footwear history. (haha)

Really now, how many times have I desperately wanted to pack boots in my suitcase only to take them out at the last minute due to lack of space and overweight dilemmas? Not only that, these boots are great for bipolar weather like ours. I have been in numerous situations wherein I leave my house in shorts and sandals due to the blistering heat only to be caught with wet feet and heavy monsoon rains later in the day. I cannot stress enough how much I despise getting my feet wet in rain and gutter water. Yuck.

If you're thinking durability, these boots have got what it takes depsite being foldable. They are not glued to the sole but sewn which ensures that they are not going to break apart at the seams when drenched with water. If you're worried about the texture, just spray with a sealant and your good to go.

These new foldable boots by Butterfly Twists are definitely at the top of my wish list.

Does Love at first sight work in real life? Perhaps this is the question that the third installment of the Before series attempts to answer. Being an indie film, you never know what to expect and that's the beauty of it. Unlike those overproduced Hollywood blockbuster dramas, the Before series is real and raw albeit romanticized for viewing pleasure but the bones are there.

The first installment of the "Before" series was released to coincide with my personal coming of age.  Before Sunrise came out in January, 1995. I was fifteen and starting to get intersted in the opposite sex. This movie shaped my perception of what a relationship should be like - full of conversation, spontaniety and getting lost in each other. My romantic life has been molded by this philosophy and it has always worked in creating memorable, life-changing affairs although not always for keeps but always unique and with no regrets. Full of passion and raw wanton just like Jesse and Celine's brief encounter in Vienna.

Jesse and Celine's love affair seems so unedited and relatable which is probably why Before Midnight is the most anticipated "threequel" release of the year.

Before Midnight takes us to what life is like for the two once adulthood has settled in and the realities of life come into place. Just like any other normal relationship, a succesful and happy one is never achieved without a few road bumps in between.

It feels like I grew up with these two and I can't wait to see how theirs turns out and if it all resembles mine since I basically found the "Jesse" in my life as well.

However the movie turns out in the end, I'm sure that it will continue to inspire its millions of viewers just like the previous 2 installments did.

Can anyone guess where I got today's title from? Big points if you do :))

Special thanks to Ana for her trigger-happy finger and Bauhaus for letting us do an impromptu shoot in their store. The result is this. A narcissistic outfit of the day post with tons of photos. Hate to put hardwork to waste and I honestly had a really hard time narrowing down the choices so there's significantly quite a bit more than usual. Hope you don't mind.

Been quite lazy lately (due to the change in cooler, rainy, snuggle weather...thanks heavens for that) so went for a fairly laidback look. Amped it up with my new favorite white shades from Esprit and minimalist heels from Zara for a luxe grunge look.

As a child, can you imagine anything more awesome than a toy store that gives out their merchandise for free?

Breeze made this childhood dream come true for thousands of kids at the SM Mall of Asia Music Hall last June 22.

The only currency accepted were these coupons given out once you make the pledge to become a #sigemom. No purchase or cash out required at all, just a promise to give your children the freedom to learn through experience and play.

There were lots of toys to choose from depending on the trait you would like to encourage in your child. There was sports equipment for sportsmanship, art supplies for creativity, skateboards and mini cars for courage and inflatable pools for confidence.

Aside from the pop up toy store, there were also lots of free booths and activities available for both parents and children to enjoy. From photo booths, an art and movie corner as well as those gigantic inflatable bouncy things kids love to spend hours in.

Thousands flocked to make the most out of this unvbelievable event which made me more than grateful for our golden ticket (no need to line up, yay!)

Staying true to my #sigemom pledge, I gave Nikola free reign to choose her toy. She ended up with a Spongebob skateboard. Yes, I was surprised. It wasn't exactly a normal choice for her but I'm glad she's coming out of her shell, eager to try new things.

Trust me, it is one of the best movies ever released and is definitely a must-see.

foldable boots by butterfly twists

However the movie turns out in the end, I'm sure that it will continue to inspire its millions of viewers just like the previous 2 installments did.

cherry flavored antacids: ootd

Amped it up with my new favorite white shades from Esprit and minimalist heels from Zara for a luxe grunge look.

breeze sigeland

As a child, can you imagine anything more awesome than a toy store that gives out their merchandise for free?

Breeze made this childhood dream come true for thousands of kids at the SM Mall of Asia Music Hall last June 22.

breeze sigeland golden ticket

As a treat for all the new #sigemoms, Breeze gave out free detergent as well. Whoopie!

Breeze Sigeland was one of the most memorable events I've ever been to. The look of pure happiness on all the kids faces was truly heartwarming and priceless.

In case you missed this year's, stay tuned for the next. Your kids will LOVE you for it.
