nikola's global art experience + giveaway!

Monday, September 30, 2013

Me and Nikola spent our entire Saturday afternoon last weekend at Global Art. She has been looking forward to this since I first told her about it a couple weeks ago. She kept asking me "How many sleeps 'til art class?" everyday since then.

She had extremely high expectations which I worked hard to tone down to avoid disappointment in case things didn't turn out so well. I hate to see her little face in a frown but I shouldn't have worried.

Our experience was far more enjoyable than anything we could have anticipated.

Global Art isn't your average art school where kids are given sketchpads, an image to copy and a roving teacher to instruct them once in awhile.

Global Art prides themselves on a unique learning system and technique. They don't just teach your children how to draw or paint, they also encourage them to develop their creativity and imagination through different workbooks that are given once you enroll your child.

global art philippines
A great example is this excercise wherein a teacher will ask them to create whatever storyline and creature they would like to turn this blank image of a circle into.

Three different kids had three different interpretations:

global art ortigas
Wouldn't you like to see your child's  own interpretation as well? Interesting right? It's also a great way to tap into their psyche and see how they're feeling inside.

Their core programs are divided into 3 levels:

  1. Foundation Level (for kids aged 4-6) - Children work with simple themes and dotted lines. It's designed to build a child's dexterity and concept of colors and shades.
  2. Basic Level (for kids aged 7-10) - Introduction to fruits and animals. They are also encouraged to create their own illustrations while learning various techniques.
  3. Intermediate Level (for kids aged 10-12) - Students learn even more techniques by handling human figure based themes.
global art ortigas
Aside from their core programs, they also have Cartoon/Comic programs, G Clay, Glass and Acrylic painting.

global art ortigas
I haven't seen Nikola this engrossed in a single project for a long time. Her free time, which isn't much given the heavy load of assignments she takes home from school everyday, is spent watching TV or playing on her iPad. Two activities I'm not comfortable encouraging which is why I was so happy to see her enjoying herself so much in something productive.

Aside from creativity and imagination, Art lessons are also great for establishing confidence and concentration in our children. It's also one of the best ways for them to de-stress from school work and focus on developing other areas of their personality.

global art ortigas review
Despite my age, I also had tons of fun dabbling with acrylic paints...

I am no dancer but when Tiesto starts laying down his beats, my hips take on a life of their own. He has an intuitive way with music that allows my inner dancing diva  to shine.

Just listening to some of his hits on YoutTube like “Beautiful World”, “Sweet Things”, “Elements of Life”, “I Will Be Here”, “Silence”, “Work Hard Play Hard” and “We Own the Night" make me want to close my eyes, jump around and pump my fists in the air.

It is for this reason, among many others, that Tiesto was the first DJ to ever be allowed to play at the opening ceremonies of an Olympic event in Athens, Greece. He is also the first to rank #1 in the Top 100 DJs list by DJ Magazine for 3 consecutive years and was hailed as the 40th Greatest Dutch Citizen of All Time and Officer of the Order of Orange – Nassau by the Dutch Royalty in 2003; and International Dance4Life Ambassador in 2006. body shop tea tree squeeky-clean scrub review + 70% off pre-holiday sale

Sunday, September 29, 2013

I don't really have oily skin or severe breakout problems but once a month, sometime around my period, my hormones go haywire and take my skin along with it.

For about 5 days a month, I get 2-3 pimples which are large enough to make up for the rest of the month. Gross.

So I make it a point to have pimple medicine handy at all times.

Dennis, on the other hand, has extremely oily skin so this new product from the Body Shop called the Tea Tree Squeeky Clean Scrub is more for him although I like to use it at least once a week for prevention.

body shop tea tree squeaky clean scrub review
One 100ml tube costs P550 and since it's an exfoliant that you're not supposed to use everyday, I can imagine it lasting a very long time.

body shop tea tree squeeky-clean scrub review
It's key ingredient is community fair trade tea tree which is tough on impurities yet non-stripping on skin (which is why even if I have dry skin, I can still use it occasionally). The reason for this is because Body Shop only uses hand-picked tea tree leaves and not the whole branch which creates a high quality extract that is pure and very potent.

body shop tea tree squeeky clean scrub review
What I Love About It:
  • affordable
  • instantly brightens skin
  • fair trade
  • lovely unisex scent

After one wash, you will notice an immediate change in your complexion. You do in fact look well-scrubbed, fresh, brighter and squeeky clean. So yes, it stays true to it's word.

For max results, use with other Body Shop Tea Tree Oil products.

And before you go, here's some great news! Get your favorite Body Shop products like bath and body, skin care, make-up brushes, shower gels, home fragrances, hair & accessories and a lot more at 70% off!

What's not to love about Team Manila?

They're local, comfy, affordable and SUPER cool. Definitely a part of my top 5 favorite local brands.

Here's a long overdue outfit post taken during our Makati Staycation the day after the Team Manila opening at SM Aura.

Twin ootd's with Ana are always a hoot but this one is definitely for the books!

We were both super excited about our TM loot from the day before and we were super comfy in our outfits (menswear rules!!!) add to that still being on a natural high from all the fun we had the previous night.

Here's my take:

Got a small mens size Supremo shirt and a Daily Grind snapback. Wore with my black skorts which seem to go with everything. Footwear of choice were my yellow Bensimon sneakers which I always pack during trips since they occupy very little space and are super comfy). Also love the bright and unorthodox contrast of red against yellow.

The fun part.

What happened here is that we got bored waiting for the others to finish shooting their ootd's so they could take pictures of the two of us together for our traditional twin ootd's. Paul and Tracy really take forever (peace guys. hahaha) so we decided to photobomb without Paul's knowledge at first...the rest is history....

topman shangrila opening + fashion fridays x garage magazine

It's nice to see regular guys these paying closer attention to their appearance. Even my self-confessed "slacker friends" who used to throw on whatever shirt was at the top of the pile or nearest them have started to develop their own personal sense of style (Good on you, guys! *high five) and at the center of that 180 is Topman.

Topman has made it super easy for them to look cool without even trying. You can go in the store, pick whatever and come out looking as fresh as the next hipster around the corner.

So to my friends who have graduated from "frump school", this is for you.

You're no longer designated to a back corner of Topshop. You now have your very own, stand alone Topman boutique in the posh new interiors of Shangri-la's East Wing. Congrats, more more stuff for me to borrow. ;)

topman fashion fridays x garage magazine
And with Topman's latest collaboration with Garage Magazine called #TopManFashionFridays, expect hot new drops every last Friday of the month with certain pieces carefully curated by Garage Magazine's stylists.

subsport street style fashion
I couldn't be more stoked since I have been finding myself shopping for small sizes in their section a lot lately. (menswear is so much more comfortable!!!)

Maybe it was for this reason that me and the #TheClingys were invited to the super cool Sub Sport themed opening party of Topman's Shangrila branch or because almost every other outfit post in our blogs contain at least one Topshop item? I don't know but whatever their reason is I am just glad I was given the opportunity to be there since I've been a big fan ever since Topshop first opened in Robinsons Ermita years ago.

Moving on, here's some photos of the launch plus several pieces that caught my attention...

So there you have it. There's LOTS more in store, it was just a bit difficult to take photos since the place was packed but plan a visit soon, you won't be sorry :)

l'occitane - cherish your hands #happyhandsph

Friday, September 27, 2013

There are few things more embarassing than getting caught off-guard on a first date with "labandera" hands. It isn't just a turn off it also speaks of the way you take care of yourself and hence the way you will treat your perspective partner. Uh-oh...

Hands are the most hardworking part of our body and it only makes sense to pay attention to them and do what it takes to keep them looking young, healthy and attractive.

L'Occitane's new products turn a ho-hum task into a luxurious experience that you will look forward to everyday.

loccitane one minute hand scrub
Their new one minute hand scrub guarantees soft hands in 60 seconds.

Organic brown exfoliating sugar gets rid of dead skin cells while shea butter, sweet almond and grape seed oil soften and nourish your skin.

loccitane cuticle and nail cream
Follow with L'Occitane's Shea Butter Cuticle and Nail Cream which nourishes and strengthens nails and cuticles.

Just apply one drop to the edge of each nail and gently message in a circular motion directly into the cuticle. Allow cream to penetrate fully then gently push back you cuticles.

Finish with L'Occitane's best selling Shea Butter Hand Cream (a favorite of mine for over a decade) or try these new Shea Butter Hand Creams in 3 delicious new scents: Rose Tenderness, Passionate Jasmine and Subtle Violet.

loccitane smoothes caress hand cream
The new scents are also available in lip balms and body creams.

loccitane softest embrace body cream
Also notable is their Strongest Commitment Solidarity Soap. 100%  of profits from the sale of this soap goes to financing eye-health projects run by NGO's in developing countries with the support of the L'Occitane foundation.

loccitane solidarity soap
Buying L'Occitane doesn't only help you take care of yourself better but of millions of other women as well. L'Occitane only purchases fair trade shea butter from their sustainable, co-development partners in Burkina Faso.

So join me and millions of other women as we empower each other and make the pledge to take care of our hands.

See video below for the proper techniques used in hand care, share with your friends and don't forget to use the hashtags #happyhandsph and #loccitaneph.

juicing in the third world - basic tips and recipes

People juice for different reasons. One of the most popular being weightloss, replacing meals with fresh juice.

I juice primarily as a supplement. I find the daily recommended allowance for fruits and vegetables to be unrealistic when devoured traditionally in meals so I choose to juice it instead. Juicing makes it possible for me to ingest an average of 3 apples or bananas, 1 cucumber, 1 carrot, and half a bag of spinach in one tall glass plus its raw so I get more out of my fruits and vegetables.

Another reason why I juice is for detox and energy. A tall glass of fresh juice in the morning can pump you up more than 2 cups of strong coffee. It's also very good for the skin and hangovers (cucumbers specifically).

juicing recipes philippines
You can find lots of juicing recipes online but the thing is, most of them are from the States and their recipes use a lot of fruits and vegetables that aren't available in our country or are quite pricey for everyday consumption.

So when you juice in the third world and want to keep things in budget, here's a few things to remember:

  • recipes are just guides, guides to ensure that your juice ends up tasting good
  • if for health reasons, most veggies/fruits have local counterparts with the same health benefits (just google)
  • simple guide to follow: always have one kind of fruit, one kind of green leafy (spinach or pechay), and cucumbers (I am partial to bananas and apples, affordable, healthy and easy to obtain)
  • be careful when adding herbs to the mix, esp. parsely, they are quite pungent and overpowering so its best to add some lemons to take out the edge.

juicing tips philippines
For this particular juice, I used apples, carrots and cucumbers for the simple reason that it's all I had in my ref, normally, I would throw in a bag of spinach as well.

some important points to remember before you get started:
  • since you're having them raw, make sure you wash your fruits and vegetables properly
  • have a separate chopping board to lessen the risk of cross contamination
  • always make sure your pitcher is in place, I forget sometimes and make a HUGE mess.

black and decker philippines juicer
Once you have all that covered, it's time to juice.

When purchasing a juicer, make sure the spout (?) is wide enough to fit most fruits without needing to chop, a lot of the cheaper juicers have tiny throats which I can imagine to be a huge hassle in the long run.

Do your research, do not skimp to avoid headache. If you have money go straightaway for a Breville, if not, research research research. I have heard a lot of juicer nightmares. Some leak, others cant juice veggies, motors just stop and other similar stories.

I am pretty happy with my Black and Decker juicer which I was able to score on sale at the SM Appliance Center. Regular price was around 12-14k but I was able to purchase it for only P7k. A lot of people tell me it performs the same way as a Breville.

sm appliance center juicer
So anyway, let's juice.

When juicing, take your time, don't force the veggies down the shoot to get the most juice + nutrients out of them. And don't bother peeling, your juicer will do that for you.

sm appliance center juicer
Once you're done, collect all the pulp and re-juice to make sure you squeeze all the juice out.

If you juice your veggies and fruits separately, you can re-use the pulp in numerous other recipes like soups, applesauce, cookies, dog treats or as an extender for siomai/burgers:

juicing recipes philippines
2 carrots, 2 cucumbers and 5 apples transformed to two pints of my daily dose of health.

juicing recipes philippines
It may not look very appetizing but trust me, it's good and very refreshing. Most veggies are tasteless and your juice almost always ends up tasting like the fruit you threw in the mix. In this case, my brown concoction tastes like apple juice.

Try juicing, it's a great alternative for people who don't particular enjoy veggies to get their daily dose and ps. it also works great for people with digestive problems. :)

If you have more questions, feel free to hit me up. Hope this helped :)

Back with another outfit post wearing my favorite new Kangaroos sneakers from Tobys again! Seriously proud that I was able to snag them for only P947 :P

As you can probably tell, I have rekindled my love affair with sneakers and running shoes these past few months. I hardly wear heels anymore and my back is rejoicing!

This is what I wore to the Instax Neo Classic launch several days ago. The theme for the day was black and white so I decided to wear my new (also favorite) shirt by Illest which I ordered through Pormada.com. I couldn't believe how nice and accomodating the people behind Pormada are. This shirt was out of stock so I emailed them asking when they might possibly have new drops. They didn't just reply personally right away (which on its own is already rare), they even restocked my size especially for me! Plus they're super professional and I got my orders straight away with no problem at all.

Anyway, here's some photos plus a couple of silly outtakes with directions from Pax:

I couldn't be more stoked since I have been finding myself shopping for small sizes in their section a lot lately. (menswear is so much more comfortable!!!)

Maybe it was for this reason that me and the #TheClingys were invited to the super cool Sub Sport themed opening party of Topman's Shangrila branch or because almost every other outfit post in our blogs contain at least one Topshop item? I don't know but whatever their reason is I am just glad I was given the opportunity to be there since I've been a big fan ever since Topshop first opened in Robinsons Ermita years ago.

l'occitane - cherish your hands #happyhandsph

Buying L'Occitane doesn't only help you take care of yourself better but of millions of other women as well. L'Occitane only purchases fair trade shea butter from their sustainable, co-development partners in Burkina Faso.

So join me and millions of other women as we empower each other and make the pledge to take care of our hands.

juicing in the third world - basic tips and recipes

So anyway, let's juice.

When juicing, take your time, don't force the veggies down the shoot to get the most juice + nutrients out of them. And don't bother peeling, your juicer will do that for you.

Hope this helped :)

illest
