palty raspberry jam on black hair review

Thursday, January 30, 2014

Remember a couple years back when I went a bit mental on hair dye and would diy color my hair a different shade almost every month? There was orange first before going into blonde, then blue, bright purple and finally plum.

As expected, my hair became severely damaged and I temporarily retired my salon colorist aspirations for fear of going bald. (did you know: at home hair dye kits contain harsher chemicals than those in the salon) Since then, I have relied on salons to cover up my grays...hate to admit but yes, I am in that stage :(

Anyway...I usually go to JURO for my hair needs and have been planning a visit since around September last year to go in for a cut and color (I plan that far back because it's quite expensive but you only need to go in at least 2x/year) in time for my holiday vacation. Before I could book an appointment, I got an email from Azta Salon asking if I would like to try their new Chromabond treatment (see review HERE), my curiosity got the better of me so I said yes only to find out that I wouldn't be able to dye my hair again until January. I've no regrets about my Chromabond treatment, in fact I love it so much and don't know if I can live without it anymore but the color, being similar to a cellophane treatment, washes out after awhile and I'm left with super aging white hair at my temples.

I didn't want to have white hair in my vacation photos and there wasn't really enough time to book an appointment at a salon so I did the next logical choice which was to visit Watson's.

I was initially planning to purchase my usual L'Oreal but then I caught a glimpse of all these other cutesy Asian dyes across the shelf. I have heard about these foam dyes and have always been quite curious so I decided to get one and finally try it out myself.

I was choosing between 2 brands (forgot the name of the other one but it was significantly cheaper at around P280). I had not done any research beforehand so I was relying purely on gut. I decided to go with the Palty because it's Japanese made and so far I have loved every Japanese beauty product I've ever tried from K-Palette to Cure.

A box of Palty costs P499 and I choose Raspberry Jam because it was either that or a really light blonde shade which I cannot remember the name of (another sweet confection I presume). There were only two shades in stock but after researching a bit online afterwards, I found out that there over 15 different shades to choose from. Oh, well...

palty raspberry jam
Instructions on the outer box are purely in Japanese.

Inside it contains a plastic cup, mixer, cream dye, water solution (developer), conditioner, gloves that actually fit and to my delight, an instruction manual with proper English translation (yay). I love how everything Japanese tend to look Sanrio-ish.

palty raspberry jam review
Just like traditional hair dyes, you first empty all contents of the "water" into the cup followed by the cream dye.

You're then supposed to "chop" it up and down (similar to when you break butter in eggs when baking)  followed by mixing it around. The instruction manual says to mix only until you reach the inner mark in the cup but I guess I got a bit carried away with the chopping that it only took a few swirls before my mixture started drpping over the brim. In the end, it didn't matter though, it's not really an exact science.

palty raspberry jam on black hair
Once you're done mixing, you'll be left with something like this:

Reminds me of a banana smoothie. Never mind the undisolved bits, they won't matter and will simply blend once you apply the dye to your hair.

palty raspberry jam on black hair
Now the tricky part, applying it evenly onto your hair.

Contrary to what other reviews may have said, I actually find Palty less messy than other dyes. I hardly dripped any product onto my floor and sink.

Back to dyeing, make sure to follow the instructions and not just dump the solution onto your head. If you want a nice even color, make sure you apply only to your roots first because the roots take longer to achieve lift. Next you'll want to roughly section your hair and apply the dye one section at a time by scooping small amounts into your hands and rubbing it in lightly. Finish off by massaging your scalp to ensure the dye is distributed evenly.

Leave on for 20 minutes, add 10 if you have thick hair like mine then rinse off with warm water and apply the conditioner provided.

japanese foam hair dye
Here's what it looks like right after under yellow light with no flash:

japanese foam hair dye review
It provided about 90% gray hair coverage which was okay with me, I just simply plucked out the few resilient ones left.

Here's another shot taken the following day after two shampoos under natural light:

palty raspberry jam on black hair
The red undertone is more visible and vibrant and it has been that way since then. I clean my hair with Cynos Argan Oil Shampoo and Conditioner (see HERE) which probably helps the color from fading out quickly.

Overall, using Palty was a fun and positive experience. It seems to work extremely well on thick, coarse Asian hair like mine and I would definitely purchase it again in the future.

Wednesday, January 29, 2014

A few days ago, I went to the post office to pick up a few parcels. What's great about my short-term memory is that it always feels like a surprise.

It feels like my birthday each time I rip open a plastic pouch. It's always a delight and definitely beats predictable shopping at the mall.

I've been online shopping from Hong Kong, Singapore and China almost every month for about 3 years now but this haul has got to be the best I have ever received within that duration.

First, let me introduce you to my new favorite shop: 6KS
Shipping takes a bit longer than Romwe but their merch is MINT! Seriously. Better than I could have ever anticipated.

Quality is comparable to that of Topshop and Zara for less than half the price plus their selections are always fun, stylish and unique.

Check out my loot:

First up is this ultra-elusive kawaii-ish leopard hoodie. I have been trying to order this from 3 different sites for a long time but it's always out of stock or not available to ship in our country. I finally have it and I'm soooo happy that it arrived just in time for my trip to Hong Kong. Weather is supposed to be freezing there right now with wind chill and everything so this is just perfect.

In person, it looks like a cross between a posh leopard print fur coat and a fun hoodie.

Also, it doesn't shed! Sooo happy I finally have it. If you've been on the hunt for a similar coat, you can check it out HERE.

The second thing I ordered was this New York Yankees baseball jacket that has got Dennis drooling. See it HERE. It goes up to a size XXL so maybe it can fit some guys as well. Anyway, there are measurements provided on site to be sure. :)

Next up this heart print button down shirt from Romwe. Planning to wear it this Valentine's because I've always been anti sappy, lovey-dovey so it'd be nice to change things up a bit as a uniformed soldier of love. (HAHA) Join my army? See it HERE.

ps. It's on sale right now but with very limited stocks left. Only 7 pcs for small :)

And last but MOST DEFINITELY NOT THE LEAST, this adorable leopard print camera bag from Persunmall!

mario badescu silver powder review (bye bye blackheads!)

Tuesday, January 28, 2014

I am fortunate that I don't really get pimples - just a couple in really odd places when I'm about to get my period.

It's a different story for blackheads and whiteheads. I don't think anyone in the world is immune to these two. No matter how flawless a person may appear, there will always be several of them lurking somewhere...

Mine are predominantly located at the tip and sides of my nose but I also get a few on the apples of my cheeks and mustache area. :P

I have tried many blackhead eliminating products but none of them really worked, exfoliating also doesn't help much. The only solution really was to get a facial and have them pricked (ouch!) I really hate the painful contrast of pricking against the nice facial massage that comes beforehand...it's also quite pricey.

That brings us to Mario Badescu's Silver Powder:

mario badescu silver powder philippines
Mario Badescu's Silver powder is pretty affordable at just P745 for a large 29ml pot. You get a lot of product for your money that will last you a long, long time.

Key ingredients are Calcium Carbonate, Kaolin and Zinc Oxide. Yup, just 3, isn't that refreshing? No lengthy list of chemicals we don't understand.

How it works: dip a wet cotton ball into the powder, leave for 10 minutes and remove with a toner.
Alternate method: Put a little bit of the powder in a separate container and mix in with a little water.

The consistency should be that of clay/plaster.

If you have a severe blackhead/acne problem, continue to use twice a week until all traces are gone then treat as a maintenance product and re-apply as needed. Some people even use it as mask or add a drop of tea tree oil to the mixture and leave overnight.

Mario Badescu's Silver Powder worked miracles on my skin, it was also non-drying even on areas of my face that weren't particularly oily (as you can see in the photo I applied it to most of my face). There was no negative reaction either. I highly recommend it and hope it works for you too!

The packaging also allows you to split the product between friends/sisters so I think that's another plus because it means that you can also split the cost.

Mario Badescu is available at the Beauty Source of all Rustans Department Stores nationwide.

nikon coolpix S01 review

Monday, January 27, 2014

I was given a Nikon Coolpix S01 for a project I did with Converse wherein we needed to shoot ourselves unedited using only the camera provided (see post HERE). The resulting photos were to be utilized in a collage for a worldwide campaign.

Yes I was super iffy when I first got the news. First of all, circumstances meant I would have to shoot indoors which is always a problem especially when you live in a condo with not much natural light available but it's not like I had a choice right? Anyway, I was surprised with how good the results were.

nikon coolpix s01
First, the specs:

  • 10.1 MP
  • 3x zoom on Nikkor Glass lens
  • 2.5 LCD Monitor
  • 720p HD videos with sound
  • Built in rechargeable lithium ion battery that's good for up to 190 shots/1 hour 40 minutes of video recording
  • Built in 7.3GB memory card good for more than 3,000 shots at 10.1 MP quality or 3 hours of video
  • ISO 80-1600
Personally, I don't really bother much with specs anymore when it comes to basic point and shoot cameras. They all roughly come with the same MP, zoom, etc. What matters to me more are sample shots, convenience, price and wether or not they take good photos.

nikon coolpix s01 philippines
Most of us already own smartphones with really awesome cameras that take decent photos. The digital camera (IMHO) is a dying breed unless it brings something different to the table.

The question these days really is wether or not a digicam is worth the hassle to lug around for the quality of photos it can capture.

That's what I'm going to try to answer.

nikon coolpix s01 review
nikon coolpix s01 price philippines
nikon coolpix s01for sale sulit
What I love most about my Nikon Coolpix S01 is its size. Not much larger than a zippo, smaller than a credit card. This minute size makes lugging something extra around not so much of an issue anymore since it can easily fit into any pocket or even a tiny evening clutch.

It is also extremely simple to use. My grandma who can't even work a dvd player was able to figure it out in a few minutes.

nikon philippines
The S01 hardly has any physical buttons on it. Just an on and off switch, zoom, play and home button.

It threw me off in the beginning because I kept trying to find where the settings were located. There are none. The camera is pretty smart and adjust everything automatically for you. All you really have to do is point and shoot for great quality images.

Basically, the only things you can manually set are flash and image size.

nikon cool pix s01 review
Instead of the usual sport, macro, portrait (etc) settings, the S01 comes equipped with Filter Effects that you can use to post edit your photos on cam without the need to upload.

nikon coolpix s01 megapixel
Here's what won me over: its ability to shoot extremely well without flash indoors with minimal natural light:

indoor no flash, natural lighting
Here's another example I stole off the internet shooting in natural daylight:

outdoor no flash
Photos captured by Nikon's Coolpix S01 have extremely vibrant color.

The fact that it does not have manual settings might be a turn off to some but the camera is pretty smart and seems to do a great job of pre-determining the correct settings for different situations producing clear and vivid photographs 99% of the time. 1% is mostly human error which is practically impossible to commit given the simplicity of the camera.

To sum it up: The Nikon Coolpix S01 is a super fun and easy camera to use. It's great for younger children, senior citizens and those who just want to document holidays and events with decent photos but don't want to bother with cumbersome photography settings. Photo quality is considerably better than an iPhone 5 so yep, this little baby has an edge over your smartphone!

The Nikon Coolpix S01 retails for about P9900 in the Philippines, around P7500 abroad.

palty raspberry jam on black hair review

Instead of the usual sport, macro, portrait (etc) settings, the S01 comes equipped with Filter Effects that you can use to post edit your photos on cam without the need to upload.

Here's what won me over: its ability to shoot extremely well without flash indoors with minimal natural light:

Here's another example I stole off the internet shooting in natural daylight:
